Dai-shogi board size is 15 squares × 15 squares. It has 130 pieces( sum of black and white) in initial. And it has 38 kinds pieces( 29 kinds in initial)
Most of kinds pieces can promote. And promoted pieces changes its movement, so you need to consider carefully promotion or not. One piece can promote only one time.

The origin of piece' names after juels, divine beasts, literal movement or human resources.That transration to English is with my Japanese-English sense so otherone may use other transration.

王将（王）、玉将（玉）/ oushou

A 王将（王）／玉将（玉） moves exactly one square in any direction. It is same as the king of chess
And it mean is same "King". So you will win the game when you get opponent's 王将（王）／玉将（玉）, If the opponent don't have a 太子
王将（王）direct meaning is the king general. 玉将（玉）direct meaning is the jade general.
王将（王） and 玉将（玉） are same movement. In common sense the superiors uses 王将（王） and the inferior uses 玉将（玉）.If same the black uses 玉将（玉）. The reason the charactor is diffent has many theories. In the first only 玉将（玉）was, and one 玉将（玉）change to 玉将（玉）

金将（金）/ kinshou

金将（金） moves one square in any direction except for back-diagonal.
A promoted 金将（金） is a 飛車（飛）。
金将 means a gold general. King loves the gold (right?),so 金 is the side of king in the beginning of the game.
And they are the last guard of king. That expresses the real world!!!

銀将（銀）／ginshou

銀将（銀）moves one square diagonally or forward.
A promoted 銀将（銀） is a 竪行（竪）
銀将 means a silver general. The 銀 is the second valuable materials( The First is of course gold), so 銀 are the next of 金.

銅将（銅）／doushou

銅将（銅） moves one square forward, back, or forward-diagonal.
A promoted 銅将（銅） is a 横行（横）
銅将 means a cupper general. the cupper is not valuable in these day, but the cupper is the third valuable materials in the ancient world.
And the cupper is third lank medals of sports games. The 銅 is the next of 銀.

鐵将（鉄）／tetsushou

鐵将（鉄）moves one suare of forward or diagonally forward.
A promoted 鐵将（鉄）is a 金将（金）
鐵将（鉄） means an iron general. The next of cupper is iron. That sense is interesting. Iron is important in the war.

石将（石）／sekishou

石将（石）moves one square of diagonally forward.
A promoted 石将（石）is a 金将（金）
石将 means the stone general. Yes it is the stone. They don't have other ideas or stone is also important? I am wondering.

桂馬（桂）／keima

桂馬（桂） moves one square forward, plus one square forward-diagonal even if the next square is not vacant
A promoted 桂馬（桂） is a 金将（金）
The origin of 桂馬 has various theories. 桂 is a cinnamon and 馬 express the movement. The cinnamon is important woods.
桂馬 movement is like of the knight of chess only the forward part.

香車（香）／kyousha

香車（香） moves any number of vacant squares in forward.
A promoted 香車（香） is a 白駒（駒）
香車's origin is like 桂馬. 香 means fragrant woods and 車 means vehicle. In the old age fragrant woods vehicle was gorgeous.

反車（反）／hensha

反車（反）moves any number of vacant squares in forward or back.
A promoted 反車 is a 鯨鯢（鯨）
This name expresses its movement literaly. 反 means relfction or oppsite.車 means vichles.
Original name was 奔車(奔 means rush , wildly), but changed this gentle name.

角行（角）／kakugyou

角行（角） moves any number of vacant squares diagonally.
A promoted 角行（角） is a 龍馬（馬）
This name expresses its movement literaly. 角 means coner. 行 means running away.
Why doesn't it use 車, I guess 車 go straight, it can't move this trickey.

飛車（飛）／hisha

飛車（飛） moves any number of vacant squares horizontally or vertically.
A promoted 飛車（飛） is a 龍王（竜）
The literal meaning of 飛車 is the flying vichle.But this can't jump over other pieces. This is losing its name...

横行（横）／ougyou

横行（横） moves one square forward or backward or any number of vacant squares horizontally.
A promoted 横行（横） is a 奔猪（猪）
This name expresses its movement literaly. 横 means horizontal. 行 means running away.
Why doesn't it use 車, I guess 車 go straight, it can move one square in vertical case.

竪行（竪）／kengyou

竪行（竪） moves one square right or left or any number of vacant squares vertically.
A promoted 竪行（竪） is a 飛牛（丑）
This name expresses its movement literaly. 竪 means vertical. 行 means running away.
Why doesn't it use 車, I guess 車 go straight, it can move one square in horizontal case.

猛豹（豹）／mouhyou

猛豹（豹）moves one square in any direction except for side.
A promoted 猛豹（豹） is a 角行（角）
猛豹 means a heavy leopard. The leopard didn't live in japan since the dawn of history. Shogi may be influened by same kind games of continets.

盲虎（虎）／mouko

盲虎（虎） moves one square in any direcion except for forward.
A promoted 盲虎（虎） is a 飛鹿（鹿）.
盲虎 means a blind tiger. It can't watch so it can't move forward. And it promoted to 飛鹿( the flying deer). Is it good enough?
The deers is far weaker than tiger. Blind to flying. mhhhh...

麒麟（麒）／kirin

麒麟（麒） moves one square diagonally or two squares horizontally or vertically even if the next square is not vacant.
A promoted 麒麟（麒） is a 獅子（獅）。
If you are familiar to japanese or chinese you think KIRIN is the giraff.
The kirin is not a giraff. It is a mythical creature. That shape similars to a giraff.

鳳凰（鳳）／houou

鳳凰（鳳） moves one square horizontally or vertically or two squares diagonally even if the next square is not vacant.
A promoted 鳳凰（鳳） is a 奔王（奔）
鳳凰 usually translate to phoenix. This also a mythical creature. Its movement coresponds to Kirin.

酔象（象）／suizou

酔象（象） moves one square in any direction except of backward.
A promoted 酔象（象） is a 太子（太）
酔象 direct meaning is a drunk elephant. In buddism that means ferocious mind.And this promotes to 太子（princess) . This is very interesting!

龍馬（馬）/ ryouma

龍馬（馬）moves one square vertically or horizontally or any numbrer of vacant squares diagonally.
A promoted 龍馬（馬）is a 角鷹（鷹）
龍馬 measn specially excellent horse.

龍王（竜）／ryuou

龍王（竜）moves one square diagonally or any number of vacant squares vertically or horizontally.
A promoted 龍王（竜）is a飛鷲（鷲）
龍王 measn the king of dragons or a shown human shape of the god dragon.Ordinally shogi this is the strongest, but in the Dia-shogi this has ordinally power.

獅子（獅）／shishi

獅子（獅）move twice movements of 王将（王）／玉将（玉） or two squares in any direction even if the next squre is not vacant
獅子（獅） movement has other complex rurles, show this link. 獅子（獅）can not be promoted.
獅子 means the lion,
is the king of animals, or the divined animal based on the lion.
獅子 is strong and tickey movement. It can move one square and step back current positon. That means it can be captured and step back( this called "Igui"), or pass the turn literally.

悪狼（狼）／akurou

悪狼（狼）moves one square forward , diagonally forward, right or left.
A promoted 悪狼（狼） is a 金将（金）。悪狼 means a evil wolf.

嗔猪（嗔）／shincho

嗔猪（嗔）move one square vertically or horizontally.
A promoted 嗔猪（嗔）is a 金将（金）
嗔猪 means a furry boar even The movement is very culm.

猫刄（猫）／myoujin

猫刄（猫）moves one square diagonally
A promoted 猫刄（猫）is a 金将（金）
猫刄 means a cat blade.It can't move strait, because cat is wise.

猛牛（牛）／mougyu

猛牛（牛）moves one or two squares vertically or horizontally, if the next square in its directioon can't move two squares
A promoted 猛牛（牛） is a 金将（金）
猛牛 means a raging bull. Comparing to 嗔猪 this movement is large. But raging???

飛龍（龍）／hiryuu

と金（と）／tokin

と金（と） is promoted 歩兵（歩）
It moves same as 金将（金）と is not Japanese charactor と. と is the cursive of 金

白駒（駒）／hakukku

白駒（駒）は a promoted 香車（香）
白駒（駒）moves any number of vacant squares forward, backwrad or forward diagonally 白駒 means a white horse or a metaphor of time passed too quickly.

鯨鯢（鯨）／keigei

鯨鯢（鯨）isa promoted 反車（反）.
鯨鯢（鯨）moves any number of vacant squares forward , backward or backword diagonally
鯨鯢 means a whale. Why is only this piece the sea creature?

飛鹿（鹿）／hiroku

飛鹿（鹿）is promoted は盲虎（虎）.
飛鹿（鹿） moves one square in any direcion or any number of vacant squares vertically.
飛鹿 means a flying deer. It may bring Santa Claus. Oh that is a reindeer.

太子（太）／taishi

太子（太）is promoted は酔象（象）
It moves same as 王将（王）
When the opponent have 酔象（象） even if 王将（王）captured, he/she won't win.

奔猪（猪）／honcho

奔猪（猪）is a promoted は横行（横）
奔猪（猪）move any number of vacant squares horizontally or diagonally.
奔猪（猪）means the rushing boar. The rushing boar don't watch anything, so it can't go vertical.

飛牛（丑）／higyuu

飛牛（丑） is promoted 竪行（竪）
飛牛（丑）moves any number of vacant squares vertically or diagonally.
飛牛 meas the flying bull.I have know no idea why they want the bull to fly. That is completely strange scene.

角鷹（鷹）／kakuou

角鷹（鷹）is promoted 龍馬（馬）
角鷹（鷹）has complex movement. 角鷹（鷹）moves any squares of vacantsquares in any direcion except for forward, or
moves one square froward and one more square or stay back current posion.
It means ... I can't translate it. 角 means a corner or a horn. 鷹 means a hawk.
So 角鷹 may be a hawk with a horn. Curious!

飛鷲（鷲）／hijuu

飛鷲（鷲）is a promoted 龍王（竜）
飛鷲（鷲）has also complex movement. 飛鷲（鷲）moves any squares of vacantsquares in any direcion except for forward-diagonally, or
moves one square froward-aigonally and one more square or stay back current posion.
飛鷲 means a flying eagle. mh? Any eagle can fly.It may go ordinal eagle can't get high.

歩兵（歩）／fuhyou

歩兵（歩）／ふひょう moves one square forward.
A promoted 歩兵（歩） is と金（と）
歩兵 means infantry. It is like a pawn of the chess but the its movement is very simple.

仲人（仲）／chuunin

仲人（仲） moves one square forwar or back.
A promoted 仲人（仲） is a 酔象（象）
仲人 means a mutchmaker. It may called because of standing over the infantry line.

奔王（奔）／honou

奔王（奔）moves any number of vacant squares
奔王（奔） can not be promoted.
奔王 means a wild boy( the dictionary may not agree my opinion 奔 means rush? wild? 王 means a king )
